The Northwest Arkansas Food Bank is in the process of developing a nutrition policy to work in conjunction with its Vision 2025.
The Vision 2025 has two major goals. First, the Food Bank and its partner agencies will increase distribution to 11 million meals by 2025 from its current distribution of 6.7 million meals annually.
Secondly, 75 percent of the foods the Food Bank distributes will be nutritious foods such as protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
“To accomplish this second goal, we must first write a Nutrition Policy that establishes the guideline for healthy food procurement,” said Casey Cowan, director of client services for the Food Bank.
A committee has been assembled consisting of three staff members, one community partner, one corporate partner and a representative from our partner agencies to help establish the first Food Bank Nutrition Policy, said Cowan.
The committee began meeting in January with its main goal to develop a Food Bank nutrition policy that will guide food procurement decisions of the Food Bank and promote consistent decision-making in acquiring healthier foods for distribution, she said.
It plans to meet at least six times to accomplish the task as it is following a University of California-Berkeley Center for Weight and Health guideline. This group will meet for the third time in March to begin the actual writing of the policy
Cowan hopes to have the policy ready by late spring and encourages everyone to look for it soon.
In developing its Vision 2025, Kent Eikenberry, president and CEO of the Food Bank, said the staff recognized that simply providing more food is not enough. There needs to be an increased focus on the nutritional quality of the food provided that will ensure clients are able to make healthier food choices.
Priority will be placed on sourcing fresh produce, fresh and frozen protein, low sodium/low sugar canned goods and whole grains, he added.
Cowan said the Food Bank’s Nutrition Policy will include the statement of purpose, policy rationale and benefits, the food inventory sources covered by the policy, healthful foods to encourage covered by the policy, foods to prioritize, as well as foods that are intended to be reduced at the Food Bank.
