Sometimes, not often however, I am at a loss for words.
Since starting at the Food Bank in January of 2016, I have positioned myself in
front of the computer to write a column for the newsletter. Some months the words flow out of my head
onto the screen with ease. Other months,
I find myself looking at the blank screen with writer’s block trying to decide
what to write about that I haven’t already shared with you.
Today is one of those days.
What should I write about that is new? Then I answer my own question with “what makes you think all those people remember what you wrote anyway?”
So today, I am going to start with a common theme. On behalf of approximately 65,000 food insecure people I thank you for your continued support. We could not do what we do without you.
+++++
You may notice that the number above is smaller than the number we have been using. Each year, Feeding America updates their estimation of food insecure in each service area of each Food Bank across the nation.
Several variables factor into the equation to determine that estimated number. Variables such as unemployment and availability of affordable housing just to name a couple. It is important to remember, however, that this number can spike just as easily as it comes down.
Heaven forbid that a production facility shut down and put thousands of workers on the street. But if it were to happen, that number will be right back up. In the meantime, I remind you of something I often say. “One hungry person is one too many.”
+++++
Speaking of “One hungry person is one too many”, there are approximately 26,000 young people about to enter summer vacation hungry. With school out, the safety net of school lunch, breakfast in the classroom, snack pack programs and school pantries are not available.
I often tell people there is no slow time of the year for hunger. It never takes a break, however, summer vacation time puts additional stress on families and our partner agencies. You can help. Remember every dollar you donate to the Food Bank can create 11 meals.
+++++
In June of 1988, the Ozark Foodbank was incorporated, so this year we are celebrating our 30th year of distributing food to those in need. Over those years, we have changed names, grown in the amount of food collected and distributed and continue to grow in services offered to those clients we serve.
Repeating what I said earlier, we could not have done any of what we have accomplished without you. We have several different things in the works to celebrate this milestone and invite any of you with a story to share to contact me. We want to make sure history is preserved.
+++++
One final update. Our parking lot is full of stakes, flags, painted asphalt, but still no trucks or dozers. They are working just south of the building so we are dealing with lots of dust when the south wind is blowing. I’ll keep you posted.
+++++
I would like to close with one final thank you. Because of you someone will eat today.
