As 2018 comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the year in the form of a letter to an unnamed donor, who for the purpose of this letter will be known as Keith. I would love to have the time to personally write each of you, but if I wrote over 4,000 individual letters I wouldn’t be able to do anything else during this all important fourth quarter of the year. You see, like almost all other non- profits, and for profit businesses for that matter, the fourth quarter makes or breaks our financial year. Whether we like to admit it or not, we have to have money to operate. So here goes. Please take the liberty of inserting your name and circumstances as appropriate, and know that I am thinking of each and every one of you as I write this.
Dear Keith:
Words cannot express my deep appreciation for your support of our mission. When I came to the Food Bank in January 2016, little did I know how many lives the Food Bank touched. Nor did I know how many times my life would be touched by a generous soul such as you. I remember the fall day you walked into my office. We had not seen each other for several years yet the conversation began as if we had seen each other just the day before. You ended by saying your family had a little money left over and presented me with a check as you left. You have continued to donate on a regular basis since that day.
But your support has been more than financial. You have been there as a sounding board as I struggle with ways to improve the efficiency of our daily operations. You have been there as support during those times when I’m down because I feel we are not doing enough to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. You have been there as an advocate, telling your friends that you support us and why. You have prayed for the success of the Food Bank and our mission.
You know Diana and I volunteer at our church’s food pantry monthly and have for several years. That three hour shift helps keep me grounded as to why I am here. Sometimes during the daily routine of running a business I lose sight of that. Seeing the looks of despair turn to faces of hope as clients weave their way through the pantry reminds me why I left the newspaper to come to the Food Bank. I could not have those experiences without you. Typically these types of letters end with a bunch of statistics to show what we have accomplished with your donation over the past year. I’m not going to do that this year. I am going to assure you we have been good stewards of your money. You would approve of the way we spent it if you saw the aforementioned faces. Those faces tell the story.
So on behalf of our staff, our board of directors, and more importantly, over 64,000 of your friends and neighbors, let me say thank you.
Because of you someone will eat today.
