Although the partial government shutdown that lasted more than 35 days is over, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank assisted TSA workers at the Northwest Regional Airport during the shutdown.
On Friday, Jan. 18, the Food Bank set up a mobile pantry in the parking on the eastside of the Main Terminal building to assist more than 45 TSA employees. They received two food boxes containing stable food items such as cereal, macaroni and cheese, rice, beans, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables. In addition, they received chicken and bread.
The effort was started with a phone call from Mike Malone of the Runway Group, a private development company in Bentonville, who called Kent Eikenberry, president and CEO of the Food Bank to see if it could be of assistance to the TSA workers.
“We were blessed to have enough food to help out,” Eikenberry said. “Obviously going without a paycheck can stretch the budget, and we were able to help those who are working get through the next couple of weeks.”
Malone added that he a whole bunch of suppliers came together to help the workers earlier in the week.
In addition to the Food Bank, an aviation group provided lunch to the TSA workers.
“We were trying to help people get through tough times,” Malone said. “January is usually a tough month anyway, so when you’re no longer getting a paycheck, it’s going to impact individuals.”
Eikenberry pinching his fingers together said that everyone is “this close to needing help.”
“It’s no fault of theirs that they are not getting a paycheck,” he said. “We try to assist friends and neighbors who need help.”
Cherry Hooton, local president of the American Federal Government Employees Local 917, representing the local TSA workers, said her fellow workers were concerned about paying rent, housing, child care from not receiving a paycheck.
“This is definitely some relief so that they can use their limited resources somewhere else,” Hooten said of the food supplements.
“We’re all really excited,” she said. “You could see the relief in their faces.”
Hooten praised several community organizations for assistance, including the airport, which brought in lunch, churches, passengers, and pilots who brought doughnuts.
“It was all really appreciated,” she said. “Not only was there stress on us, but our families as well.”
Morale was down after missing the first paycheck, but no one was calling in sick.
